newbie - potentiometer no voltage drop

Could someone please explain why the voltage remains at 12v across the potentiometer?

Neither is there any voltage drop chage when I alter the resistance.

You are measuring across the fixed part of the variable resistor.  Move one of the probes to the wiper (the middle terminal with the arrow).

Oh my, that's super embaressing! I did't even realise that was a virtual connector. Thanks for taking the trouble to reply, it was driving me crazy.
