during install of NI2019, canceled one package install, install then errored out, now cannot finish the install, nor uninstall what got installed.

-- Specifics--

Windows 10 enterprise, Version 21H2

OS build 19044.2728

Alienware 51m laptop, 32GB RAM

NI2017 previously installed.

Attempted install: VLM - NI Automated Developer Suite Fall 2019

As the subject line hints at, this is a tangled problem.

I selected something I didn't want from the "you might also want..." list and noticed it after the installer had been running for an hour or so.  I canceled that package, foolishly, and found that this canceled the entire NI2019 install.  I then re-started the install with the correct selections and I get this error (also shown in the graphics file upload).

There was a problem executing your request.

An error occurred while installing a package: ni-vipm (19.0.0.49152-0+f0)

Please check your internet connection and try again.

[Try again]

I then rebooted and tried again.  I got the same error.

It looks like I can't finish the NI2019 install, and I did not find an "uninstall NI2019" in the apps/uninstall list, nor in the  National Instruments folder under the Windows "flag" programs menu. So, I can't move forward and I can't "go back".

Can anyone tell me how to get out of this catch-22?

I have partially solved it.  The canceled NI2019 install corrupted my NI2017 install.  However, the Package Manager did a good job of cleaning that up and so I am less desperate now that my previously installed package is working again.

I will try again to install NI2019 this evening and post how that works.  Hopefully the NI2017 repair will fix whatever is giving the NI2019 install heartburn.

And I still get the same error:

There was a problem executing your request.

An error occurred while installing a package: ni-vipm(19.0.0.49152-0+f0)

Please check your internet connection and try again.

[Try Again]

Is this really a network issue or some kind of server issue or..?

NIPM's default error message is the check your connection. There is most likely another issue but NIPM does not handle that specifically. Capture logs and post them and someone from NI will probably help: Generating and Locating NI Package Manager Error Logs

My guess is that you either already have JKI's VI Package Manager (VIPM) installed or a newer than 2019 installed.

This is what I am assuming as well.  Some install dribble that causes an oddball error.  I did not think about looking at an error log though - I'll remember that if it should happen again.

My prior experience with updating software when an interrupted install occurs is to do a scorched-earth uninstall on my Windows machine (the installer version of the Windows "three-finger-salute".)

I left the package manager alone, the NI2019 installer appeared to find the correct license, so this turned out to be a good idea - The install is now progressing, at least it has gotten past this error - my fingers are crossed.

Thanks for reminding me that installers leave a log file and telling me where they are.

And looking at the errorlog.txt file told me exactly what you thought was the problem:

Additional error information:
-125530: An error occurred while installing the MSI at 'NIVIP00\vipm-setup.msi'. A more recent version of VI Package Manager 2019 is already installed on this computer.

Thanks for replying,
