Yet it is good design parctice to have reverse voltage protection circuits, so just connect this thing up correctly with a current limiting source and see if it is still working. 

 

Looking at the picture, the question is rather is they have caused any mechanical damage to the connector? Looks like they applied some force... and where do the screws go?
