Edit Message Settings causes TestStand 3.1 to become non-responsive

It's the strangest thing...

Occasionally, when inside the Edit Message Setting, TestStand simply goes into the Twilight Zone...

TestStand ver 3.1 has been re-installed... even recently.

Occasionally, it is possible to edit the text message and everything is fine.

However, today is the 6th or 7th time that it occurs.  Always while editing text in the Edit Message Setting window.  The buttons to accept or cancel changes dissappear and the window retains anything that is below, along the edges of the edit window.  The CPU useage increases by 50% for both CPU's on a Dual-Core PC.

Once it is in that mode, it appears to remain indefinitely (overnight).  There is no way of closing the application except by killing the process within the WIndows Task Manager, under Processes.  Ending the Application (under Applications) does not work.  Nothing else terminates the program.

Has anyone seen such strange behavior?

I know it's an older version, but that is what I am working with.

As a matter of fact, I have used version 3.1 for many years and have never encountered this until now.

I suspect it is related to the PC; however, it is the only application that has this strange behavior.

There are other NI products installed, such ac CVI 7.1.0.  And there was the trial version of LV2009 which has expired.  Plus the usual items such as MAX and DAQmx drivers.

It has become annoying..

Hi Ray,

Definitely weird behavior you are seeing...Does this only occur in the sequence editor, or in the full Operator interfaces as well?  Also, have you tried reinstalling since you saw this error, or did the error appear after the last reinstall?

Thanks for the reply Al,

Yes it is weird.

It is in the Sequence Editor.  I had never seen this behavior before, so I must conclude that it is since the last "re-installation".

I have not used the Sequence Editor since the last re-boot (last Friday).  I've been working on other projects.

I will be returning to the project soon and will need to edit the message.  I will let you know how it behaves.

Thanks,

RayR

Well... I was happily editing the sequence.  Fortunately saving at intervals.

Edited some message settings.  All was good.

Then in one instance, I needed to set out & in of the Edit Message window, only to freeze the sequence editor when returning to make a final modification..  AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!   I didn't save just before this step, so I will have a lot of typing to do..

Another observation is that all opened applications become unresponsive while TestStand remains in it's comatoze state.  As soon as it is closed using Windows Task Manager (nothing else can awake it from it's deep coma), all other applications return to normal access and functionality.

It may be worth trying another complete re-install..  But it will have to wait until I submit a release by the end of the day.

- sigh -

You might try updating to the latest version of the CVI runtime engine. The Edit Message Dialog uses CVI. I'd recommend using CVIRTE 9.0.1. You can download the CVI runtime engine from ni.com if needed.

Hope this helps,

LOL!  That's (almost) what got me into this mess 😄  LOL!  (long story... not for here 😉 )

Yes..  What you are suggesting does make sense.

I will install the latest CVIRTE and see how it goes.  Will it affect the fact that I am developing code using CVI ver7.1.0?

Actually, this might be the time to upgrade the CVI version.

Thanks,  I will post any new developments after upgrading the CVIRTE.

CVI 7.1.0 should still work even with the CVI 9.0.1 RTE installed. The CVI RTE should be fully backwards compatible. There are known issues with using TestStand with the CVI 9.0 RTE. I'm not sure whether or not this is one of them. I don't think so, but it's worth a try upgrading the CVI RTE to 9.0.1 just incase.
