How do I call a LabView FPGA 8 host VI from TestStand

When attempting to specify the the host VI in a standard LabView step an error is returned reporting that the VI is broken. On editing the VI the errors reported are "Top-level VI not opened from project" against the Open and Close VI Reference. The details given are "This FPGA Interface function must be associated with an open LabView project." .How is this done.

What you need to do is referencing the FPGA bitfile, so you don't need the LabVIEW Project Explorer open when you are loading an FPGA VI.

Have a look in Help >> Contents >> FPGA Interface >> Communicating with FPGA VIs >> Opening a Reference to an FPGA VI.
