Your VI is much too complicated. You can make this VI a popup. No need to call another. If you want the use to have the ability to manually enter a serial number, create a string control and for the VISA Read, write to a local variable of this control.
A keyboard wedge type of scanner is one that is connected in series with the pc's keyboard. It acts just like a keyboard. You only need a front panel string control. The USB scanner is seen as another keyboard as well. With either, you just use a string control and you could also use the Prompt User for Input directly as a serial number input.

You are right! My code is too crowded and I might just use a string control not a popup window. Tha way, as you mentioned, I can update the string with the SN from the scanner.
