How to control the intrument via GPIB connection from other intrument via LAN connection?

Hi,

I am not sure whether this will work or not. I am connectiong agilent E4418B (RF power meter)  to agilent MXG (N5181A) via GPIB connection.

I can control the MXG (N5181A) via LAN connection. I would like to ask whether I can control the E4418B (RF power meter) via LAN connection from MXG?
( mean from pc to MXG (via LAN), then MXG to E4418B via GPIB)

I have tried the following comand, but doesn;t work.
TCPIP0::10.0.0.122::gpib0,9::INSTR  (assume that GPIB add for E4418=9)

Pls kindly advise. Many thanks.

p/s: The purpose of doing this is to get rid of the GPIB card in the pc.
🙂

Hi,

This really should be posted in the Instrument Control forum.

I dont believe the MXG has a System Bus which would allow the instrument to control another instrument.
Therefore to beable for it to control the E4418B, the MXG would have to become a controller. This would mean controlling the MXG via then LAN, and then passing control to the instrument from the PC. You would have to look at the spec it see if it has this capability.

Is there any specific reason why you are trying to do this?

Hi Ray,

The purpose of doing this is to get rid of the GPIB card in the pc (for cost saving purpose). Yes, is like the MXG or MXA (spectrum analyzer) are act as controller.

I think may be there is some kind of setting/SCPI command can make this control?

Hi,

Can you confirm with agilent that the command you are using to communicate with the MXG is correct? Check for the right syntax being used. Once you know it is the right command, we or agilent will be able to look into it for you.
