PC BIOS Setting effecting sequence execution

We are seeing odd behavior using certain HP Compaq minitower PC's.

We have two types of machines.

In the Control Panel System Properties, both machines state the following:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Version 2002

Service Pack 3

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU

E8400 @ 3.00GHz

2.99 GHz, 1.93 GB of RAM

However, if you press F10 to get into the BIOS settings, the problematic

PC states HP Compaq 8000 Elite CMT PC and the good PC states HP Compaq

dc 7900 Convertible Minitower.  There are also other subtle differences

in some other BIOS settings but the one particular setting that is causing

us problems with the 8000 Elite is in the Power OS Power Management settings.

On the 8000 Elite, there is a setting called Idle Power Settings which was set to

Extended.  This setting does not exist on the 7900.  On the 8000 Elite, with the

setting set to Extended, a simple delay steps take a long time to execute.

For example, a 60 second delay will take up to 10 minutes to run.  Delay's

added to popup's have the same behavior.  What we also noticed is that the

total Execution time in the report is way off.  A test that takes took 16hrs will

only report around 87 minutes in the test report.  If we change the setting from

Extended to Normal on the 8000 Elite, things behave normally.

Has anyone else witnessed such behavior?

There is a known issue with some hardware not properly specifying the right timer to the OS and/or not implementing the timer properly. See the following thread:

http://forums.ni.com/t5/NI-TestStand/Wrong-Wait-step-execution-time/m-p/860397?requireLogin=False

There is a workaround in that thread. Also installing a newer version of the BIOS from the OEM might also work.

See the thread for more details and let us know if you have any questions.
