Can NI RT Hypervisor Run on PC?

Solved!
Go to solution

Dear Sir,

LabVIEW RT can run on PC, my question is could NI RT Hypervisor run on general PC, too? and is it free for download?

That could help me to install windows AP on the same platform.

Can NI RT Hypervisor support Windows 7/8?

Thank you,

Smiley Happy

I'm afraid not.  NI RT Hypervisor is designed to be run on a National Instruments PXI chassis.  NI RT Hypervisor requires intimate knowledge of the hardware configuration in the system (such as interrupt routing for each "slot" in the system, among others), and that type of information is not easily obtainable on a generic Desktop system.  Therefore, NI RT Hypervisor is only sold/supported on National Instruments PXI hardware.

Thanks Danny, here are two further questions need your help.

(1)

If NI RT Hypervisor is design to be run on a National Instruments PXI chassis only and I would like to run LabVIEW RT on ETS, on general PC.

Is there any recommend Hypervisor soltion (e.g. RTS Hypervisorwww.real-time-systems.com )support ETS? Then I can have a PC installed with Windows and ETS, and both Operating System run on the Hyperisor on my PC?

Can run LabVIEW RT and windows application on the same PC at the same time.

777849-35 LabVIEW Real-Time Deployment License for Standard PC's- ETS RTOS 5 - 10 $ 520.00

(2)

by the way, I learn from Intervalzero Web, seems ETS is a discontinued product, Software Development Kits (SDKs) for ETS are available for sale to existing ETS customers only.

Does LabVIEW RT support other RTOS? or have any plan?

Hi newbie-2009

1)  As Daniel said NI RT Hypervisor requires intimate knowledge of the hardware configuration in the system, so National Instruments recommends the use of the RTOS that is on the NI site.

2) There are other RTOS supported by National Instruments but the RTOS used depends of the hardware and/or the version of LabVIEW. Take a look to the following links.

(1) No, unfortunately there is no supported Hypervisor solution that supports an RTOS and Windows on the same system on a Generic PC.

(2) IntervalZero's version of PharLap's ETS RTOS that they sell and NI's version of PharLap's ETS RTOS used in our Real-Time systems are very different - they both started with the same base code about 12 years ago, but they have diverged quite significantly since.  Today the two operating systems are like comparing early Slackware with today's modern Scientific Linux - while I cannot speak for IntervalZero, NI has made significant investments in R&D effort on our version of ETS to keep it competitive with the best RTOS's in the industry.  We're always evaluating and developing new solutions, and are working on solutions to expand our product lines.  As products and solutions are developed, I promise we'll market them heavily.  🙂
