Are you communicating over a crossover cable? Here is a quote from this
KB which lists fieldpoint but is actually general to any ethernet
communication:
When using a crossover cable ensure to remove the
DNS server IP address from the controller network settings. If there is
an IP address listed as the DNS server other than 0.0.0.0 or blank,
installing software will timeout due to searching for that DNS server.
This will then result in the error code 56. Since you are connected
over a crossover cable that DNS server does not exist.

If you are not using a crossover cable, there must be some other reason
for the timeout. Are both devices configured with static IP addresses?
Could there be another machine with the same IP?
