Having problems loading more than 6 cards in a PXI-1006 rack

We're having problems loading more than a few devices in a PXI-1006 rack.

First off, we resolved a problem with installing 2 8421 RS485 cards (must be installed in slot 2-6.

This configuration works:
Slot 1: 8330 MXI
Slot 2: 8421 4ch RS485
Slot 3: 8421 4ch RS485
Slot 4: 6527 DIO
Slot 5: 6704 Analog output
Slot 6: Open (or I get a BSOD)
Slot 7: 6040E Multifunction I/O
Slot 8: open
Slot 9: Excalibur ARINC429
Slot 10-18: open

(I know you're going to say "lose the Excalibur card" 🙂

I'd like to add, but get a BSOD error.
Slot 13: 4060 DMM
Slot 14: 5112 OScope
Slot 15/16: 5401 Arb
Slot 17/18: 5401 Arb

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Brian,

Looks like quite the setup! So you have been able to successfully install the first 7 boards in your chassis. When you say that you get the "BSOD error" I am assuming that you mean the Blue Screen of Death - is this correct? At what point do you receive this error (e.g. during boot up, after you run a certain application, etc.)? Also, from your email it looks like you get errors when attempting to install anything into either slots 6 and 8. Which boards have you tried to install in these slots that produce this error? Were you ever able to install boards into these slots before, or is this a new chassis?

Here is what I would suggest for right now (let me know if you have done any of these things already):

- Make sure you have all of the require
d drivers installed before installing the hardware. From the list of hardware that you mentioned, I believe you should have NI-DAQ (looks like you have version 6.9.3), NI-Serial, NI-DMM, NI-Scope and NI-FGEN. You can check for these in Add/Remove Programs (Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs). Also verify what versions of each you have installed.

- You may have tied this already, but install each of these boards one at a time and verify that your system runs correctly (i.e. no blue screens). If it causes you problems, try installing it in another slot. If it continues to cause you problems, it may be conflicting with one of the other boards. As such, try removing (one at a time) one of the original boards in slots 2-9.

Note: this is the same response as the one I gave in your email. Since troubleshooting this issue might get more involved lets continue our discussion via email.

Thanks Julia,
We tried nearly every combination of hardware and software possible. Our local NI guy offered one of his NI8176 embedded controller to help troubleshoot our system. Not only did the controller find our hardware, but we daisy chained our new PXI-1006 with our old PXI1000b chassis and all worked great!

Our problem was with a Blue Screen of Death that appeared at bootup. The BSOD indicated our BIOS (HP Vectra VL420) may not have been fully ACPI-compatible. The BSOD recommends reinstalling Win2k and disabling ACPI by pressing F7 during a text-based installation.

We'll try a fresh install with ACPI, then without, and if that doesn't work, we'll reinstall everything on a Dell dual xeon box.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Brian,

I thought that might be the case (problem with the PC). Thanks for keeping me up to date though. Please let either I or your local sales engineer know if you run into any other issues, hopefully this reinstall will do the trick. Have a great afternoon!
