How can I power up the 8115 controller without using 1078 momentary contact switch.

I am using an 8115 controller installed in a PXIe-1078 chassis. I am rack mounting the system and I have numerous cables originating at the PXIe-1078 chassis that prevent me from using the front panel momentary switch. Is there a method to have the 8115 boot without using the momentary switch on the PXIe-1078 front panel?

Hello EdH,

Unfortunately there is no way to remotely control the power line of the PXIe-1078. Though the PXIe-1078 has a DIP switch on its backplane this only toggles the control of the Power from the Controller to the Backplane. With this you may be able to mimic a power on sequence but that is unsupported.

I have many PXI-1044 & PXI-1045 racks in use in locked cabinets on the production floor (so they don't get touched) and have used others elsewhere in hard to reach remote locations.

I purchased the PXIe-1078 to save money on a smaller system than normal.

I now find out during startup of the completed system, that the Power-ON functions differently than the others.  With out any note in the manual to this fact.

Normal: AC on, Turn the rack on, cycle AC and the rack comes back on BY IT'S SELF.

PXIe-1078: AC on, Turn the rack on, cycle AC and the rack stays OFF.

Now I find out that NI has no way/plans of changing this function in it's firmware. Also, Their is no work around to this GLOWING FAILURE on NI part.

I am now stuck with racks I can not use and must purchase racks that will power-up when AC is reapplied.  So much for the savings I was going for.  Sorry I am ticked off. Thanks NI.

It's quite an old post but it might help somebody eventualy.

You can configure your system so that the PXIe-8115 automatically powers on when AC power is restored to the PXIe-1078.

On the NI PXIe-1078 backplane is a four-position DIP switch (SW1). Switch 1 of SW1 controls the chassis inhibit mode.

Configure the switch like below (you have to remove the controller from the chassis to reach it) :

Then you have to configure the BIOS of your controller :

  1. Power on or reboot your NI PXIe-8115 controller.
  2. When the message "Press <DEL> to enter setup" appears, press the key. The setup program loads after a short delay. The Main menu is displayed when you first enter the BIOS setup program.
  3. Navigate to the Power/Wake Configuration menu.
  4. Set the "Restore After Power Loss" setting to "Turn On". When set to Turn On, the controller will power on when AC power is restored.
  5. Save the new settings and reboot your controller.

I have had to do the same with a PXIe-8821 + PXIe-1078 Chassis.
