Labview RT 8.2 execution trace tool is extremely slow to draw/redraw the plots.

I am using Labvie RT's Execution Trace Tool and it is extremly slow to draw or redraw the plots. It takes minutes to draw the inital plot, redrawing the plot when changing scale or rearranging the plot lines. So slow that at times it becomes a waist of time to use.

I have viewed NIs web events that  utilize the tool and the plots get drawn in a resonable amount of time. My desktop PC has an Intel dual core  processor with a good video card.

I have reduced the data collected by decreasing the input value to the initial Execution Trace VI. This does have some effect but it is still very slow. And as you zoom in it seems to speed up but its still really slow. I have also turned off the thread view to speed it up some.

I would get more use out of the tool it would draw the plots in a reasonable amount of time.

First let me start by saying that we've gotten that feedback on the Execution Trace Toolkit and we are currently working on a version with greatly improved performance, specifically with regards to drawing speed and usability. I think you'll be pleased with the new version but I may be a little biased since I've been working on it. Until then, I'd say you are on the right track with using 1.0 and trying to reduce the amount of data that you are collecting. You can try are reducing the buffer size as long as you still capture the events you are interested in the trace. You can also disable detailed logging if you have that enabled.

Good Luck,

Thanks, I have reduced the buffer size and turned off detail tracing. The tool is very useful and I would probably use it more if it was not so slow.

Since you said your on the development team I would like to make a suggestion. Alot of time is spent rearranging the lines, placing relevant traces together to get a better picture of what is going on. Instead of having them spread randomly  over the plot and possible on other pages. It would be nice if the traces were automatically organized better. Or, if this is not an easy task, the user could organize the traces on the first run and then subsequent runs would plot traces with the same layout.

Any inside info as to when the new version will be available?

Yeah, I figured you would ask when, but unfortunately I can't say much on that front. As for re-arranging threads and VI, we did improve that so I think you'll be happy with that as well. We use the Trace Tool internally quite a bit as well so we had a vested interest in improving it.

Hello Dave,

When we get a beta-version ready of Execution Trace Toolkit you might be able to join the beta program and try it out before it is released. We can then receive valuable information from you as a user.

Information about beta software can be found here:
