MAX does not list devices/interfaces with PXI-1042 and CardBus-8310

Maybe this isn't a problem, but I'm curious...

I've installed a CardBus-8310 interface to my otherwise bare PXI-1042 chassis.  I suspect that since I don't have an embedded controller or any other devices installed, that MAX has nothing (new) to list.  There are no hints in the manuals for this situation.

I did do a refresh in MAX.

The CardBus interface is recognized by the PC, I think correctly.  It is a listed "compatible" laptop, running Win2K.

I guess I'll know for sure when I go to install my first DAQ card.

GO GO Yubari,

You are right! Max does not auto-detect the cardbus and you would need to configure it manually. Here is what you need to do,
  1. Go to Devices and Interfaces ->PXI System.
  2. Right Click on that and select Show PXI Buses .
  3. Now you will have different PXI buses listed there. You will realize that underneath one of those buses, you will find your DAQ card listed.
  4. Right click on the PXI Bus and select Identify as a PXI Chassis. Now a Chassis will be created for you instead of the PXI Bus.
  5. Right click on PXI system and deselect the show PXI buses.
  6. Right Click on the Chassis and Identify it as a PXI-1042.
  7. You should be up and running 🙂
  8. Click on Save.
Please let me know if you still have a problem after doing the above.

I should be getting the daq card tomorrow, so I'll give a try and let you know.  Thanx for the detailed steps!

Your advice worked great.  I did set the chassis to a type PXI-1042.

Slot 1, however, is a "PXI System (Unidentified)", and doesn't provide the option to select PXI-8310 (my starfabric interface to laptop); when I try to identify as other, I can't seem to find the appropriate INI file to select.

Also, my DAQ PXI-6289 is listed under the NI-DAQmx Devices tree and is not shown as slot 2 of the chassis.  I wonder if this is normal when using the cardbus interface?

Anyway, I'm fairly confident that the setup will work as-is.  It's on to setting up numerous matrix switch modules!  I've got a project to  scan 195+ diff coupled inputs.  Yikes!

This is my first experience with PXI.  In the past I've used GPIB, daqcards, AT and EISA cards, and even VXI.  I'm hoping I won't be disappointed.  I decided to skip the whole SCXI thing.

When identifying your system, identify your PC as an "External PC" as you do with our MXI PC to PXI products. You can then identify your chassis as Ayman outlined.

I saw the option to desiginate as External PC, but didn't understand.  I'll try that!  Thanx much.
