PXI 8186 embedded controller

This is in continuation with query posted by me earlier.

I removed the controller (8186) from the chassis (1052) & inserted into another 1052 chassis. It worked fine without any problem. I then again inserted it back to the old chassis. I connected the monitor to check the boot process of the controller. The hard disk was recognized (indicated by Drive LED) during the first start. But when I restarted it did not boot up (the drive LED did not glow).

What could be the reason for this start up problem. Please get back to me at the earliest.

Did you remove all boards in the chassis?

I have one faulty board which when in the chassis, the controller will not start at all.

Thanx for ur reply. I removed all the boards (DAQ card 6280 & SCXI 1125 with 1328 Modules- 8 nos.) from 1052 chassis & started the controller. But it did not boot up. I also the disconnected the other chassis. I tried the controller in other 1052 chassis but it did not boot up. The controller boots up randomly. I replaced  the hard disk, RAM & also the battery but it did not boot up. Now I am forward to get some further leads to go about solving the problem. Please reply at the earliest.

thanx

If you ar asking for replies at the earliest, you really need to give better error descriptions.

Have you checked fuses, have you tried another controller in that rack?

Do you get any messages at all on the screen at startup? What do they say?

If you take the controller back to the chassis where it works, does it work there?

Did you look for messages in the system error log?

You say it worked once? Did you do a full startup and a proper shutdown then?

Do you have any other boards in the chassis or anything else connected?

Thanx a lot for the reply.

1. I am not aware of the fuses. But I did reset the circuit breaker behind the

chassis. I want to check the working of chassis before trying another controller.

Just a confirmation that controller is not gone bad because of the chassis. Is there

any way to check the chassis.

2.During the FIRST start up the controller boots normally with all the messages as

expected; RAM is recognised;I get the option of exploring BIOS settings;Labview RT is

also booting;MAC address is also recognised;also shows the IP address and finally my

start up application also starts. But when I exit from BIOS or switch OFF & ON again

it does not boot up.

3.The controller is no longer working in other chassis as well. But when started it

the drive LED just glows for a second & goes OFF.

4.Could not look for messages in the system error log.

5.Yes it had a full start & could u guide me on proper shut down of controller.

Normally I just switch OFF the chassis power.

6.The chassis has DAQ card 6280 & 1328 modules(8 nos) connected & also DAQ card

connection to 1001 chassis which is further connected to another 1001 chassis.

You have 2 chassis and 2 controllers.

your controller from first chassis is working with second chassis. That means first controller is working fine.

Now try and see if some other controller is working fine with first chassis or not. Then we will be in a position to tell if the chassis is fine or not.

Also elaborate your problem properly.

Contact local NI support if you are facing some problem with hardware.

Hi,

I saw the 5th reply just now.

I think the problem is with power distribution in chassis. Contact local NI support and try to figure out if there is anything wrong with any of the hardware.

Thanx a lot for the reply. Is there any way to check the chassis. I checked the voltage monitoring port behind the chassis using a DMM & found all the voltages (5V, 3.3V, 12V & -12 V) as specified for the chassis.

"But when I restarted it did not boot up (the drive LED did not glow)."

does thah mean there is no way at all you can get it to boot again? On the second / failed boot, did you see the BIOS screen or anything on the screen? If you do not even see the BIOS screen, it must be a hardware issue.

The power switch on the controller only turns on/off the controller itself while the mainframe switch also turns on of the power supply to the whole mainframe.

Sorry I do not run RT so I do not know the proper shutdown method.

I would disconnect the other modules from the chassis to see if it makes a difference. You only need to pull them out 20 mm or so.
