Hi Nick,
Thank you for the explanation!
I just tried the DP port connection from PC to Thunderbolt card. I still have the same error message.

Hi Yimin,
Do you have a way of verifying the port works with another Thunderbolt device, such as a Thunderbolt dock? If something else doesn't work, I suggest contacting Dell to have them setup the card correctly. I would also suggest looking through the add-in card instructions, check the BIOs settings it requires, use the short DisplayPort cable that should have come with the card, etc. Unfortunately these cards are not straight forward and this why they are not recommended.
Best,
Nick

As @Nick described there is no reliable way to know if the Thunderbolt 3 card is fully functional and a complete implementation of the protocol for reliable working of a Thunderbolt 3 PXIe chassis.

Hi Nick,
Unfortunately, I don't have another Thunderbolt device that can test if the card working properly. However, from NI MAX, it does show all device drivers are installed properly. It just gives me error message when I try to run my program.
I am in the process of ordering a Thunderbolt 3 card. Finger crossed that it will work with PXIe-1083 system. Thanks!

Hi Santhosh,
Thank you so much for replying!
Are you saying it will not work even I purchase a Thunderbolt 3 card? I saw the other post that the error goes away after changing to Thunderbolt 3 card.

Wait a minute, you do have a 4141 power supply, it is possible that the power supply is damaged and the root cause of the error. Can you test whether the 4141 works with soft panel or instrument studio or running one of the examples?

Hi Santhosh,
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I tried the instrument studio and run tests on 4141. It does give the same error message.
However, I do have the same set of hardware connecting to my laptop, which has a built-in Thunderbolt port. And it works without any error message.

The Internal Hardware Error only happened with discrete Thunderbolt 4 controller, Maple Ridge based on my testing so far. It has device ID either 0x1137 or 0x1134. You should able to identify them in Device Manager.
All Thunderbolt 4 add-in cards in market are using Maple Ridge so they won't work well with SMUs generally.
Some laptops (e.g. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5) might use discrete Thunderbolt 4 controller so you may have to figure out yourself or check with OEMs. I have tested integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller on Intel 11th Gen and 12th Gen CPU, they works well with SMUs. The device ID of integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller are 0x9A1B, 0x9A1D, 0x463E, 0x466D based on driver details in Device Manager.

Hi YiFan,
This makes so much sense!
I had SMU working on my laptop, where the device ID for Thunderbolt is 9A1B and 9A1D.
The SMU doesn't work on my desktop, where the device ID for Thunderbolt is 1137.
So where to purchase integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller for desktop?
Thank you so so much for your input!

Device ID 9A1B and 9A1D are integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller in Intel 11th gen mobile CPU.
I have looked for desktop motherboard with Thunderbolt ports previously. The outcome was all desktop CPUs don't have integrated Thunderbolt controller in them based on block diagrams in Intel datasheet: 13th Generation Intel® Core™ and Intel® Core™ 14th Generation Processors Datasheet, Volume 1 of 2.
The workaround was replacing the Thunderbolt MXI with PXIe-8398 and PCIe-8398 MXI cards and it works with my old Dell desktop.
