Booting PC-Real Time-Target without Bootdisc

When I tried to install the software into the real-time PC from MAX, I got this error.

The operation could not be completed.  Operation failed with error code: 59.  Operation Failed.

I re-installed the LabVIEW Real-Time PC format disk and found out that I could not boot the real-time pc from the hard disk but only from the floppy disk.  I verified that the real-time pc was FAT32 formatted and the partiton was active.  As many times as I tried, I could not boot from the hard disk but only the floppy.  I went ahead and configured the network configurations and installed the software in MAX while the boot disk is in the real-time pc.  I was able to rebooted the real-time pc without the boot floppy disk after configuring and installing the software in MAX.

Hello SumTumWong,

Thank you for contacting National Instruments.  I have been looking into the error that you received when trying to install software on your Real-Time PC from MAX.  Here is a knowledgebase article that may help explain why you are getting this error.  From what it sounds like you able to boot to your RT PC again is that correct?  Please post back to this forum and let me know if you have any further questions on this issue and I will assist you to the best of my ability.  I hope this helps!  Have a great day!

Thanks!

Yes, I am able to boot my RT computer in LabVIEW RT without a PC Boot Disk now.  Here was the scenario.

1. I configured the BIOS settings.

2. Used FDISK to format my computer then performed a reboot.

3. Used PC Format Disk to format the RT computer then performed a reboot.

4. The RT computer did not reboot in LabVIEW RT.

5. Inserted the PC Boot Disk into the RT then performed a reboot successfully in LabVIEW RT.

6. Took the PC Boot Disk out then performed a reboot unsuccessfully.  Now I realized I was not able to boot in LabVIEW RT without the boot disk.

7. I inserted the PC Boot Disk again.  Using MAX, I installed the software to the RT.  I rebooted the RT machine successfully.

8. I took the PC Boot Disk out and performed a reboot just to see if the machine would boot in LabVIEW RT.  It rebooted successfully into LabVIEW RT.

I assume that after step 3, I should be able to reboot into LabVIEW RT without a PC Boot Disk right?  I never experienced this before confinguring other RT computers.  I just thought it was kind of strange.

My problem is back again.  I am formatting a new computer.  I completed all the necessary steps before installing the PC Format Hard Drive Disk.  Now I can't boot in LVRT without the boot disk!

Thanks for the response.  I used the USB to format my computer and it fixed the problem.  The Floppy PC Format Disk always give me problems.

We have countless problems when we try installing RT through a floppy disk. But we can't get the computer to boot from an USB drive. We always get a PHARBOOT error... Any special steps we have to take for the USB drive to be bootable? We set up the BIOS to use the USB-FDD as first boot and it seems it actually attempts to boot from the usb drive. Yet we always get that error even with different pen drives. Any ideas?

Btw, the single board is an Adlink NuPRO 851... Don't know why it doesn't work seems to check with the hardware compatibility list...

When I created my USB boot memory stick, I had to back up the data to another drive and format the USB memory stick.  Does your other thumb drives have other files on it?  Are you trying to format the computer to boot up in LabVIEW RT or do you want to boot up from the USB drive?

We use a clean USB drive to create a PC desktop utility drive using MAX. What we want (for now) is for the computer to actually boot the utility that is in the drive. What we get on bootup after he detects the pen is:

FDD

PHARBOOTSYS error
