NI 9870 - where to start

We are buying a 9870 for our cRIO for RS232 communication.  We are not sure what software to use (FPGA & RT).  Should we start with http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2164?  This seems to be generic (e.g., supports generic TTL lines).  Is there something more specific to the 9870?

Thanks,

Steve

We received the 9870 and I was excited to read a flyer saying to install software from ni.com/987x.  However, that software refused to install.  It complained about requiring Labview 8 and NI-CRIO 2 (I believe).  I have Labview 2012 and NI-CRIO 12.  I imagine the sw is so old that the version checking is broken.

I found this, which http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370984R-01/lvaddon11/crio-9870/, which looks promising.

Oops,  the link was supposed to be http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2164

But that doesn't use any of the 9870 really ...

This seems much close to what we need

http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/6366

I wish this information was included in the 9870 manual somewhere ...

Hi Steve,

The software that the documentation directed you to is for older versions of LabVIEW.

Here is a list of software you need for the NI-987x modules: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/72858E9FE36630B586257458005CF420?OpenDocument

If you have LabVIEW 2012, there was a patch released to fix issues with the NI-987x modules.  It can be found here: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/A1DEA3B97FEE3A1086257A8D005898D7?OpenDocument

Here are resources for learning more about using the NI-987x modules:

Using 987x Serial Modules with CompactRIO: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/E6700473687BB0DA862578BE005116B0?OpenDocument
NI 9870 or 9871 Does Not Show Up In FPGA IO Constant: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/9BF90AF3B60A5458862575DE00541F3F?OpenDocument

I apologize for the confusion.  Hope this helps!

Regards,

Dayna P.
