PXI-8186 is not pingable

Solved!
Go to solution

I apologize ahead of time as I am rather new to LabVIEW and PXI hardware.

I have a NI PXI-8186 controller that all of a sudden is not able to be reached via the network.

The PC is connected to the controller via a hub.  I was able to ping another device also on the hub so therefore the PC NIC is OK.  Since then, further troubleshooting, I connected the PC straight to the PXI via an ethernet crossover cable but again was also not able to ping it.  Therefore, (obviously) I cannot reach the controller in MAX as well.

When the PXI boots up, I see the following

Press <DEL> to enter SETUP

To me it seems like the controller is not fully booted.  After a reboot, it stays in the state as shown above.

I have tried to go into setup, but it is not able to reach setup and I receive the following message but it never proceeds:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Entering SETUP...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other information:

+ The "PWR OK" LED on the PXI is solid green.

+ The "DRIVE" LED on the PXI is off.  This LED does not blink even during a reboot.

+ The Ethernet "10/100" LED on the PXI is solid green.

+ The Ethernet "Act/Link" LED on the PXI constantly blinks orange.

With my minimal experience with this hardware/software what other things can I troubleshoot?  Is there some way to boot the PXI in safe mode or is that only available if I can get to the SETUP menu?  Do you recommend a reformat of the hard drive?  If so how can I do this and how do I get the application back on the PXI?

I believe the harddrive on the controller failed.  I will know for sure Monday as I am picking up a backup controller.
