i'm having the same issue with labview 2011 SP1, NI RIO 4.1. Per the chart it should be compatible but i keep getting the error: "the target does not support custom software installations" Any ideas ?? we have a lot of problems with getting rio's up and running in the lab i work at. i've set up maybe 7 and it always takes me an hour or two to install the right stuff, see it in max, fiddle with the software...a pretty big hassle.

I am having the Same Problem...
Cannot install software on NI 9148.
I have LabVIEW 2011 (no SP1) and NI-RIO 4.0
So, I am going to try downloading the latest version of NI-RIO (ver 12)
It says that it only has support for LabVIEW 2011 SP1, so I am wondering if I need to install the Labview 2011 SP1 also?

Ben,
Per the KnowledgeBase article on RIO compatibility, LabVIEW 2011 + NI-RIO 4.0 should work. With RIO 12.0, you would need LabVIEW 2011 SP1, or one of the other versions listed in the article.
NI-RIO and LabVIEW Version Compatibility
There must be some other issue. Do you see some error message when you try to install the software? Check to make sure you are connected correctly to the device in MAX.
Here is the general Getting Started page for the Ethernet RIO Expansion Chassis. Note that while it says LabVIEW 2010 is the required software, it is actually the minimum software requirement. The versions discussed above will work.

I fixed my issue by installing the Compact RIO Recommended software sets from the Device and Drivers DVD.
Somehow RIO 4.0 was installed, but those software sets didnt make it.
