installing Windows OS

Hi all!

I have a PXI-8196 Controller with a RT license.  My problem is the following, for the project i don't need real time, therefore i want to install windows OS instead of RT (Actually i need Windows,because i use IRIG B card and i don't have the drivers for RT...). Well I don't have the choice,  i must install Windows OS.

So, my questions are:

1) How can i install Windows OS on a PXI-8196 RT controller. Does it exist any procedure to follow ???

2) How can i retrieve the RT license on my Controller, and maybe reuse it in the future ... ???

Hi

This can be done with the 8196 controller. As you are already running RT, your HDD is formatted as FAT32.
In this case all you need is a USB CD-Rom drive that must be USB 1.1 compliant, and a Genuine Windows XP CD and license key.

The main steps you need to know are:

1. Go to your BIOS and set you boot device options. (Put the USB CD in the top spot)
2. Go to the LabVIEW RT options and check the boot setting (OS / RT / Hardware switch) this is important later for booting between windows and RT.
3. Exit BIOS and save changes.
4. Put your Windows CD in to the USB drive and reboot the controller.
5. Follow the onscreen instructions for installing Windows.
6. After installalation, login to windows. You will have no drivers at this point for graphics / network / and so on.
7. You can get the drivers from Here
8. You will probably need to burn the drivers to a CD and then use the USB CD to copy the drivers to windows as the USB ports will not recognise USB keys at this time.
9. Install the drivers and then you will have a fully working Windows 8196 controller.

To Dual boot between Windows and RT, you need to go back to step 2 above and set if you want RT or Windows.

In response to your second question you do not need to save the RT license key as the 8196 contains your RT safemode executable on a piece of Flash ROM, so when you choose to use RT again, if you have deleted your c:\NI-RT directory in windows this ROM will recreate it and install the RT safe mode kernel, when you reinstall RT from a remote system using MAX, this gives you back the full version as you were using it before hand.
