"unable to send command to remote system"

I get "unable to send command to remote system" in MAX 4.3.0f0 when trying to set the static IP of an unconfigured cRIO-9014 RT controller.

I have the console output of the 9014 on Hyperterminal and see that it is infact booted normally (NOT in Safe Mode) and is waiting to be configured. MAX properly detects the device yet when I attempt to set a the static IP (either one that I choose or one that MAX suggests) MAX times out trying to configure the target and gives a dialog indicating "unable to send command to remote system".

I can not get the device configured. This state remains after reboots of both the PC and the target.

FYI: I have a clean WinXP installation (just done earlier this afternoon). I have a clean installation of the LV 8.5 platform of which NI-RIO 2.3.1 and MAX 4.3.0f0 where included.

Ideas?

Hi Southern Cross,

Have you made any progress since you posted?
There's really good documents that shows you step by step instruction of how to set up your CompactRIO

It is located in MAX (Measurement and Automation Explorer)

Configuring a CompactRIO Controller in MAX

The manual of 9014 also tells you more about the dip switch settings

Operating Instructions and Specifications
section: Connecting the Controller to a Network

Are you using a Ethernet Cable or Cross over cable? (you should use cross over cable if you connect the controller directly to your computer)
What's the software on your cRIO?

Let us know if you got it working

Good luck

Hi Southern Cross,

If you are just getting started with your cRIO, I would do the following steps:

1)  Format the controller in MAX
2)  Set the IP, Subnet, Gateway,  DNS, and name of the controller in MAX.  If I am having problems I like to use a crossover cable to start out.
3)  Then install the software.  I believe in 2.3 there are software sets, so you don't have to pick and choose, just typical and lite ( I believe).

After each step I like to reboot.  After that you should be good to go.  Also since you are just starting out I would suggest getting the RIO 2.4 drivers.  If you get a problem, which step was it in?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried pretty much all of that and more. In the end the I was able to resolve this by formating my PC and reinstalling the OS and NI software. Unfortunate I had to use such a sledge hammer solution but nothing else seemed to help.

Cheers.

I am really sorry to hear that.  I had something similar happen to me with my target.  I reinstalled the OS and LabVIEW and found out that it worked.  Unfortunatily for me it worked because the act of reinstalling reset my firewall settings, and that was the problem all along.  If you do ever find out the cause, it is always good to have a resolution in the forum.  Take it easy.
