How do I measure Sound Levels and send a signal when the sound level reaches a certain level?

Hi Seankilly,

For hardware, I recommend:

1. NI 9234: It can directly connect to IEPE microphone. You may find more information from http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/203421

2. NI 9401: You can find more information about this TTL DIO from http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/201849. If you use diffrent voltage level for sending digital signal, you may select one from http://sine.ni.com/nifn/cds/view/main/p/sn/n19:Windows,n21:7056,n24:cDAQ,n4:7692/lang/en/nid/1036/ap/daq/ps/25.

3. NI cDAQ-9172: You should use this chassis for operating above modules. You may find more information from http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/202545.

For software, I recommend:

1. LabVIEW: Graphical development system. You may find more information from http://www.ni.com/labview/.

2. Sound and Vibration Toolkit: Include a set of function to measure sound signal for LabVIEW. You may find more information from http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/12152.

Once you've evrything installed ready, you can find an example program from LabVIEW>>Help>>Find Examples>>Search with "sound" key word. There are couple of sound
level examples you can modify.

Then, in example finder, go to folder Hardware Input and Output>>DAQmx>>Digital Generation for an example of sending digital signal.

By mixing two example together, you should be able to achieve your task.

Hi, forgive me for not elaborationg my project. I'm quite new to the forums.

I'm currently working on a simple microphone circuit and using an NI USB - 9162 daq (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/14166). I am also using labview as my programme to measure and record and send a signal to an led light connected by wires. The problem i have now, is writing a programme to convert the signal from the sine wave to a sound level for example decibel level. Thanks. 😄

Hi Seankilly,

9162 is just a carrier.

It's not a module itself.

Please name a module you've in hand so that I can give more information.

Another thing is that I don't think a module applicable with 9162 has both analog and digital funciton in one module.

Therefore, I don't think you've enough hardware in your hand.
