On strain gauge & load cell

Could anybody please advise me on the strain gauges, which are to be bonded on a model anchorage with diameters of 3~4 mm, and load cell, which is to be installed at the head of the model anchorage. The above sensors are used to measure the dynamic response of the model anchorage subject to dynamic impulses which would be operated in a centrifuge. Besides, the natural frequency of the model anchorage is about 4 kHz.

Hello Apotentialuser,

Please refer to the following tutorials. They will help you get started with your strain and load measurements.

Load Cells:

Or you can search the development library for tutorials and example code:

I hope this helps. Please respond if I can help with more specific questions.

Many thanks for your information which is very useful indeed. Apart from strain gauge and load cell, accelerometer is also proposed to register the signature of the model anchorages response under the applied impulse.

More specifically, we are about to carry out a research program to investigate the dynamic performance of soil anchorage subject to dynamic impulse in a geotechnical centrifuge, i.e., on a small scale basis (the model anchorage would be 3 mm in diameter). To successfully complete the study, we would require extensive instrumentation and measurement devices.

Presently, we are proposing the following instruments:

1) 30 strain gauges
2) 5 accelerometers (or 10)
3) 5 load cells (or 10)

Totally, 5 model anchorages are to be const
ructed and instrumented, i. e., each of the five model anchorages would be equipped with 1 accelerometer, 1 load cell and 6 strain gauges. However, the model anchorage would be tested dynamically on each individual basis, whilst the other four are also to be monitored during the tests.

For a active model anchorage which is under testing, simultaneous sampling is preferred for the above mentioned 8 sensors to be measured at the same instant in time (Besides, it is also understood that the natural frequency of the model anchorage is estimated to be in the range of several kHz). Whilst for the other four, simultaneous sampling could be less demanding. It would therefore be ideal that simultaneous sampling can be switched among the active testing model anchorages.

It would therefore be much appreciated if you can further advise me on a complete DAQ solution for this purpose. And cost is certainly another major concern as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

You might try calling (800) 531-5066. This number will connect you with an Internal Sales Representative (ISR) who can recommend a system and provide you with a quote.

One possible configuration for your needs is:

1 SCXI-1001 12 Slot Chassis
4 SCXI-1520 8 Channel Strain Gauge Input Modules
1 SCXI-1531 8 Channel Accelerometer Input Module
1 SCXI-1180 Pass-Through Module

This is the chassis and the main modules you could use. The ISR will be able to tell you what cables, terminal blocks, and accessories you will need.

I hope this helps,

Once again, many thanks. I am presently looking into your proposed configuration for our application. Would you please also recommend one Multifunction Data Acquisition card for this application, if necessary.

Also, we are considering alternative solutions using your multiplexer. It would be greatly appreciated if you can also advise us on that.
