SC-2345 Safety Grounding

We use the SC-2345 signal conditioning box with the 120V AC power option (pwr-02).

We notice that the AC power ground essentially is available at pins where the power adapter connector connects to the main SC-2345 backplane.  However, it does not appear that the metal shell of the box or the backplane is tied to the 120V (building) ground.

People here want to ground the box shell metal to the 120V ground conductor by connecting a wire inside the box from where the 120V ground conductor comes in to the metal chassis.

The thought is that if we have a signal >50V coming into the box on a BNC connector and the wire from the BNC panelette to the SCC module becomes exposed through broken or frayed insulation, it could electrify the metal case of the SC-2345 box, creating a safety hazard.

Are there any design issues other than maybe DAS ground loop/noise that would make grounding the chassis a bad idea?

We have had some issues with improper design and use of this box/SCC modules aboard a Navy ship and we are now involved in a critique over some of our design issues.  Any info you can provide about the questions above would greatly help with our description/resolution of the problems.

Hello Ed_B,

You are correct, the case is not grounded through the power supply.  There is no problem with connecting the chassis to a safety ground. If you have the chassis rack-mounted and your rack is grounded to earth/building ground, this would be an acceptable grounding scheme. We leave it up to you to decide where you would like to ground the chassis to. You won't cause any ground loops if you ground to the power supply as long as you choose the correct ground configuration for your source, such as differential, reference single-ended, or non-referenced single ended. You can read a very nice article about ground considerations in the Field Wiring and Noise Considerations for Analog Signals tutorial.

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Regards,
Laura
