Rio 1.0 USB draws too much power

We are a rookie foster team and we recieved an old Roborio from a team that closed down. When we tried to image to our rio were were unable to connect to the rio. The power lights were lit up and the only error message we received was on the computer when we plugged in the USB-B, the computer gave a warning that the connected device was drawing too much power. We tried several computers and cords and wifi box and were never able to connect to rio. We borrowed another rio from a local team and ot worked fine so we know that everything else we had works.

Hi Matthew630,

I'm Matthew (!) with NI. Thanks for posting on the forums.

When you say:
> The power lights lit up

Which light(s) specifically?

Only the power light as far as I can remember. I'll send a picture later today when I get a chance to hook it back up.

If the power light is the only light and it is flashing red, that indicates a short (which would explain the USB power complaint).

If that's the case, please try:

* Hold the unit upside down and shake vigoruously

* Open the device using the four screws on the back and the two screws at the power port and clean the unit off using compressed air. (Maybe also use a flashlight to inspect the board closely for any remaining metal shards and remove them as well.)

I tried cleaning out the rio but it didn't make a difference. The status light was green for only a second when it first powered up, then went out.

Might be a silly question, but just to double check, the only things connected to the roboRIO while you work on this is a known-good 12V power supply and the USB cable?

That was first question I asked myself. We tried two different usb cords, and tried connecting to rio via ethernet. I think we used 3 different laptops and even tried a desktop. Before we changed out the power supply we borrowed a rio from another forat team and it was able to function correctly with our computers, cords, and power supply. The mentors for the team that was helping us said they think the rio was faulty.
