RoboRIO 2.0 - Unrecoverable Error

Hello,

At the STL Regional this year we had to switch out our RoboRIO 2.0 mid competition after it stopped working properly. Luckily enough we had a spare RoboRIO 2.0 and the sd card from the original booted up just fine on the new one. We talked with the CSA (Jason) and he took our old RoboRIO 2.0 with him to inspect, he could not get it working and recommended we contact NI about a sending it in for a repair. I am available to try doing more troubleshooting but not sure what else to try. It has been quite some since then but earlier this summer we tried booting it up again with the same result. I do know the image on the sd cards we tried were okay because they worked in our other roboRIO 2.0. Let me know what steps I can take to see if this device can be repaired or fixed. Thanks!

Hi eohara1706, thanks for posting on the forums.

You mentioned that you know the SD card is good because it works in another rio. To rule out connection issues, can you check the seating on the card (is it all the way in, and staying all the way in?), and try powering the roborio on?

Yeah I can definitely try this, I will also see if I can find another SD Card and write an image onto it with belena etcher as well. I will report back hopefully later this week, thank you!

So I did spend some time with the roboRIO, took it apart and cleaned all the dust and debris from the board, took the thermawing off as the adhesive had particles stuck to it as well. Then tried my best to clean any debris off of the conformal coating. It appears to be working again after flashing the image with belena etcher. Reinstalled the thermawing but it did not stick as well as originally, is there a method or adhesive that is recommended to reattach to the cpu? With supply chain the way it has been we are hoping to have both this one and our current one on the robot for use next year in case stock is limited and I would like to make sure the thermawing is good to go.

Also kinda off topic, but is it possible to flash a roboRIO 2.0 without taking the SD card out? I have tried wiring in with ethernet or usb on both roboRIOs multiple times and the image flashing always fails.

No - the SD card holds the image (is the boot device) - so the only way to image the roboRIO 2.0 is to remove the SD card and flash the card.

Can you help me understand what you mean here?
