RoboRIO2 unreliable

During our 2nd event, our RoboRIO 2.0 started having issues. After a regular-seeming match, we brought it back to the pits and eventually noticed that the status LED was blinking orange.

We first tried to reformat it using the roboRIO Imaging Tool to reformat, but the tool couldn't find the RoboRIO when connected via USB. We then removed the microSD card and attempted to image it with a separate disk imaging tool. That succeeded, and then we put it into the RoboRIO. We were then able to see it in the roboRIO Imaging Tool, but it failed to be updated to the correct team number using Edit Startup Settings. We then tried reformatting it through the roboRIO Imaging Tool again, which also failed.

We then heard that there were some issues with the microSD cards that were distributed with the RoboRIO 2, so we tried going through the steps above with a different microSD card. We were able to write the image to the microSD again, but hit some more problems either editing the team number or deploying code - I don't recall exactly which, but we gave up and switched back to an old RoboRIO 1 that we had sitting around.

Back at home, we are able to image a good microSD card, Edit Startup Settings to update the team number, and deploy and run code. But we are reluctant to trust this RoboRIO2 because attempting to format the RoboRIO2 using the roboRIO Imaging Tool fails with the below error indicating that there is a problem with the firmware and is then unable to find the RoboRIO until the microSD card is reimaged outside of the RoboRIO.

Note that the Imaging Tool does not appear to be able to update the firmware on the RoboRIO2.

Also, when starting the RoboRIO2 in safe mode (by holding the Reset button until the status light comes on), the Imaging Tool is not able to find the RoboRIO, regardless of whether the microSD card has a good image on it.

Is there something that can be done to fix this RoboRIO 2 so it is fully healthy?

Hey there, I'm sorry you had troubles with the device after a match during one of your events.

I am glad to hear you were able to format it using the SD card method. This is the preferred approach, per the documentation in the FRC Docs and in NI's website. After following these steps the roboRIO 2.0 should be operating normally.

Let us know if the problem shows up again.

Cheers,

To add a little more clarification to @oscarfonseca's great answer.

The imaging tool is an older technology that is used for the roboRIO 1, and is only used to set the team number (it cannot image the roboRIO 2 at all).
