RoboRio 2.0 issue

Hello,

Our RoboRio2.0 is having issues.  It heats up and gets flaky.  It is not able to download code nor is is able to update CAN metrics.

We are hoping to RMA this device.  We are a HS robotics team.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

M

Hello TechnoDogs,

Thanks for using the NI forums. I read your device is getting very warm during operation.

  • Does this happen just when running your code or also when idle?
  • If you have more than one roboRIO, is the temperature very different between the devices when they are in operation?
  • Has this device been opened and cleaned internally? (I wonder if there is something inside that would be impeding the heat to escape, or if the coating has deteriorated that would cause the temperature dissipation to be less efficient)

Thanks for your insights!

I am a mentor on 3707, helping to answer the following questions:

  • Does this happen just when running your code or also when idle?
Running code, then we get flakey, unexpected behavior, when we switch to another rio, no heat, expected behavior.

  • If you have more than one roboRIO, is the temperature very different between the devices when they are in operation?
    Yes, see above.

  • Has this device been opened and cleaned internally? (I wonder if there is something inside that would be impeding the heat to escape, or if the coating has deteriorated that would cause the temperature dissipation to be less efficient)

No, would you like us to try this?

Thanks for providing those answers.

Yes, please go ahead and remove the back cover of the device to get access to the circuit board and ensure it is clean and with the heat spreader in place and in a good state (this heat spreader is a long sheet attached to the processor that has a foam on top. Consider also using compressed air to clean the device and ensure there is no debris.

Are your other roboRIOs also version 2.0 (with the SD card)?

Thanks!
