Veristand 2017 project will not open in Veristand 2017 after attempting to open unsuccessfully in Veristand 2024Q3

After installing Veristand 2024Q3, I attempted to run a project I had created in Veristand 2017.  The project failed to open in 2024Q3, with an error related to 32 bit file formats.  When I subsequently tried to open the project in Veristand 2017, it also now fails to open with Error 307606.

I already tried deleting the Data Environment Variables xml file as noted in other posts, and it does not change the behavior.  I also tried opening the project file in a test editor and deleting the 'identifier' variable from the file in multiple places (having seen that it does not exist when I create a new project in VS2024).  However, this still returns an error 307606 with a different complaint in the 'Possible reasons'.  Is there any way for me to recover this project?  I do not really want to have to recreate it from scratch.
