Why doesn´t my NI DeviceNet interface communicate using the Simple Who utility with my Beckhoff BK5210 module: "Message: No communication check cabling and Baud rate"? (I have: PCMCIA,Windows 2000, nidnet 1.2, cabling ok, baud rate: 125 k)

First I would recommend hooking up one device. Make sure that the light on the cable is steady and green. Run Simple Who at different baud rates to make sure that you are using the correct one. You will be unable to set the baud rate if you are not using the same one that your device is using.

If the cabling all seems correct, check the message you get back from the simple who. If you get the message "Communication Error! Please Check your cabling and baud rate" - and you are SURE that the device, the cables and the communication settings are correct - the board is probably faulty and needs to be replaced.

If you cable is extra long, say over a couple of meters I find that you need to fit a 120Ohm resistor across the CanH and L pins of the last device. This gives a good termination and allows comms to happen.

Without this resistor you will ar*e about all day and get nowhere fast.

Steve

PS - have you fed +24 INTO your DeviceNet PCI card (if you're using one) ??

With Beckoff you also need to supply +24 to the device, as well as the DeviceNet loop (PCI card), check you've done this correctly as well.

We use 5200 series devicenet blocks here, and had the same error.

Steve.
