USB input

    Hi all,
Is there anyway that you can access the usb port as an input similar to how you can use the RS-232 input.

I will be connecting a "home made" flowmeter that puts out pulses according to the flow - therefore no drivers etc for it. We have run out of rs232 ports on our computer but have a few spare USB ports and hopefully we can use those, also having the 5V power supply in the USB port will be handy .

About the only way that I know to do it is to actually get a USB-Serial converter. NI makes a 1-, 2- and 4-port converter.

Other vendors make devices too; it's a pretty common application.

Otherwise, DASYLab won't be able to work with it.

Hi,

I want to try something similar, taking an RS232 signal and feeding it to my computer via a USB port.  Assuming I get a RS232 - USB converter, is it easy to get DasyLAB to pick up the signal, or is further tweaking required? 

I'm working with DasyLAB 8 at the moment, though we have a version of DasyLAB 9 which I can use as well.

Hi Mark,

the DASYLab version won't matter... the V8 and V9 RS232 module should both work, as will V10.

What really matters is your device. The Serial Port is a pass-through way of communicating. DASYLab uses the Windows services to handle the comm port. As long as the USB - Serial converter works correctly, then DASYLab will work okay.

You need to know the communications settings (baud rate, etc) for your device, if a data request command is necessary, and then you need to know how to parse the device. It's not trivial, but, it isn't really that hard.
