DIAdem Unable to Access TDM Server 2017

Just noticed that none of today's data from test cells 1 and 2 was properly indexed.  Upon further investigation, the data made it to TDM format on the NAS, but TDM Server 2017 reported a licensing error:

TDM Server License ErrorTDM Server License Error

I checked the license server and did not see any issues in NI License Manager 3.1.  I had IT reboot the server just in case, but that had no effect.

I tried rebooting my own computer as well, but no effect either.

At this point, I am still unable to start the datafinder.

Any thoughts?

Hi Chris,

There are multiple licenses associated with each DataFinder Server 2017 that govern different parts of its behavior.

Application Installation

Instance Running

Worker Node(s)

Client Connections

The fact that you show the web interface to configure the DataFinder indicates that the DataFinder Server application has been successfully installed on the target (server) computer.  The particular error you're getting is not a client connection error, so that rules out the 4th license in the above list.  That leaves the middle two licenses.  You need a license for each instance of the DataFinder Server running on the same server computer.  If you have configured 3 different DataFinder Server instances on the same server computer, say one for Development data, one for Verification data, and another for Production data, then you would need 3 instance licenses to run the Development, Verification, and Production DataFinder instances all at the same time.  If you only had 1 instance license, then you could only run one of them at any given time on that one computer.  It's also possible for a DataFinder instance to launch but be unable to do anything if there are no Worker Node licenses available.  These are used by the DataFinder for preprocessing as well as indexing, and they are also used by the Analysis Server (if you have that installed) to run defined analysis tasks.  The Worker Nodes are shared among these 3 types of activities on the same computer.  You can specify the maximum number of Worker Nodes to use for each Preprocessor, each DataFinder Server and for the Analysis Server.

Do you have more than one DataFinder Server instance configured on that computer?  Can you tell from the Volume License Manager application how many of each of these 4 license types you have available?

Hi Brad,

Thank you for the response.  I should add that I was given a temporary activation code that resolved this problem (termporarily).  You asked how many of each TDM Server license type was in use, so here is a screenshot of that:

Here is another issue that I don't understand.  The TDM Server Manager thinks 8 users are connected, but in VLM 3.1, I can see that only 5 users are actually connected to DIAdem:

Is it possible that there is an issue with the license file itself?  I'm awaiting a response on service request 7726201 for the license.

Correction on last post:  The license file was updated, so the mismatch in licenses between VLM and TDM Server 2017 are after updating the license file.

Hi Chris,

It looks like you are missing the Worker Node licenses in your TDM Server license set.

Hi Chris,

can you please double-check if the DataFinder Server you created (TEST_DATA) is really a "Base" version of DataFinder (Server Manager overview Tab)?

Hi Stefan,

Yes, it appears to be "Base":

Hi Chris,

R&D corrected me-- the worker node licenses are only needed for the Advanced and Professional versions of the DataFinder Server, because the worker nodes are only used for the Preprocessor part of the DataFinder, and the Base version doesn't enable the Preprocessor.

Another point R&D mentioned, your DataFinder Server licenses all need to be computer-based, not user-based.  So yes, it looks like there's a problem with your license file.

Thanks Brad - I received a new license file that seems to be working.
