Shorts across output lines of NI USB-6509

Solved!
Go to solution

Hi

I'm using the NI USB-6509 board and on the device manual it is stated that external voltage sources should not be connected to any output line, so will the device be damaged if they exist short across configured outputs lines (an output line (1or 0) is connected to another output line(s). I wanna isolate all the configured output lines by connecting a series diodes and a 47 ohm limiting resistor away from the output lines, will that help.

Paul,

If the lines are briefly shorted it will most likely not damage the device because there is protective circuitry.  However, it is not recommended to connect two DO lines.  Why do you want to connect them in this way?

Hi Christina

Thanks for the concern.

I just wanna play safe in case there is a short (due to water droplets, wire strands, etc) across the NI cable or connector board; in case those pins of the cable or terminal board happens to be configured as output.

So i intend to use small signal diodes (0.7FV) or red LEDs (1.2 FV) esp bicolour in series with all the output lines as this can indicate if there is short conditio. As for the input i don't think there will be an issue as more inputs will just be read instead of the intended one.

Please if have anybetter idea either hardware or shortwise please let me know.

Hi

Sorry for multiple emails, i meant to say softwarewise NOT shortwise.
