What value resistor should I use when using a DI as a pushbutton switch?

Hi,

I am using a 6503 DIO card to read the value of a  number of switches.  I have set up the circuit as according to figure 3.4 of the manual (link) where I set a resistor between 5V and the DI and the switch between the DI and the ground.  However, the manual doesn't mention what value resistor should be used!  I have tried it with a 2k resistor (via ohm's law 5V/2.5mA) and this works ok, but does that mean that it will be drawing the maxium 2.5mA continuously?  I would rather lower the current drive, so I guess using a higher rated resistor would be better?  What value would be recommended?

Thanks!

Try somewhere between 10K to 20K.
