Did the idle---> Logout time get shortened?

Solved!

I have been logged out multiple times this AM.

Could you set the amount of time I am allowed to be idel before the forum logs me out back to what it was before?

Hi Ben,

Lithium believes that shortening the session time will give us a gain in performance, so we decided to shorten the session time to 30 minutes to see if it is true or not.  I need to wait awhile yet to know if the shorter session time has an effect on performance.

I made the change because I believed the short session time would have a minimal effect on our forum members because:

  • As long as you have the editor window open, you will remain logged in - you will not lose a post.  This is the reason the session time was originally so long because you used to lose posts if it expired.  Now, there is new functionality that keeps you logged in when creating a message.
  • Even if you become logged out of the forums, if you click New Message or Reply you will be automatically logged back in
  • The only time you might notice this is when you want to view your tracker or any private boards you may have access to.  Just by clicking the "Sign In" link you will then be able to easily do either of these activities.  You should not have to provide a password, just click the link.

I plan to leave the session time at its current length for one week to see if it helps with slow performance.  I will post an update as I know more.

Thanks,

Laura,

I find the shortened time quite annoying also.  Go to lunch.  Logged out.  Do some real work. Logged out.

Yes, it is relatively easy to log back in, but I usually position the page so that  the login link is off the screen.  That way I can see more of the message list and see at a glance after a refresh how many threads have new posts.  Scroll up, log back in, scroll down, ... a lot of extra clicks which were not previously required.

A log out time of 1:15 or 1:30 would be much better.

What performance issues are you seeing?  I had not noticed anything.

Yep I find it annoying also.

Lithium is claiming that inactive sessions are slowing down the web-site?

Unless the issue is not enough physical memory I find that one hard to swallow.

Performance has recently gotten worse by an average of 1.5 seconds.  It is especially noticable for people in Europe and Asia.

I will keep the session time as is to see if it helps performance.  Please be patient while I complete this test. I will keep the session time as is for the next few days, at the longest one week.

Thanks,

Does that explain the error message I posted in the feedback thread?  I'm sure I didn't take 30 minutes to type the post..  10 min or less..  probably around 7 or 8 minutes, but I wasn't checking the clock..

I've bumped the session time up to 90 minutes because I cannot conclusively tell if decreasing it helped performance or not.  There is a possibility that I will need to decrease it again, but I hope that it will be able to stay at 90 minutes.

Thanks,
