Idea: Footnotes for posts!

We all know that there is a limited time window to edit posts and that's a good thing to to keep threads somewhat coherent.

One problem is that we can only refer to existing posts, so If I post an example in one thread and two years later a much better related example in a different (or same) thread, I would like to be able to place a small footnote in the old posts, pointing to the new one. (Sure, I could add a post to the end of the old thread, but if the thread is long, the connection to the actual post could be lost.)

I suggest the following feature addition:

After the edit window has expired, the owner of the posts should be able to add/edit a footnote to the post. Unlimited edits of the same footmote should be allowed forever. Footnotes should have more limited functionality, but should allow links. A footnote will show at the bottom of the post after a sperator, maybe in a smaller font or otherwise recognizably different from the body of the original post. It should also contain a timestamp of the last edit.

Of course I am open for suggestion on how to call it:

• Footnote
• Post Notes
• Owner Notes
• Notes
• New Information
• Updates
• ...

Two thoughts.

1) Edits have always been complicated by the various "mirror" sites that need to get updated.

2) You could do it manualy now ( but what a pain in the ) Create a Community page for your foot notes and link it in your signature. You can edit the community page any time afterwards.

I am not dissing the idea. A number of my Nuggets could handle an update from new technology as well but adding a post to the third page of posts is not going to get noticed.

Maybe Laura could do the edits in our behalf for those posts that warrent the updates.
