NI Discussion Forum Upgrade - November 2, 2007

Laura,

Problem with new Messages posted to the wrong forum.

Can the Select Board control be made so that you have to change it from a default setting

What I have noticed is this control tends to take the setting of the last active forum, which maybe not be the actual forum you want to post to when sending a New message.

Hi Ray,

I think this behavior is the same as it was before the upgrade.  That control always defaults to to the board you clicked "New Message" from.  I haven't thought this through completely yet, but I think there are some problems with setting that control so that you always have to select something - For example, when someone starts in www.ni.com/ask and choose Discussion Forum, we guide them to the right question depending on what products they have chosen.  We don't want them to have to select the board themselves.

I definitely think posting to the wrong forum is a problem, and am not sure the best solution to the problem.  From browsing other sites, I don't know that any one else has a great solution either because I often see moderators move questions around.

About the Online status - I don't know why it does not work for you, it seems to work for others.  I'll keep looking and report the problem.

Thanks,
Laura

Hi RayR,

I think I fixed the problem with those links cutoff in CC's posts - can you check again?

Thanks,
Laura

I still see the CC bug.

I meant the bug in CC's post!

Here's an updated bug list
  1. Messages not marked as read in IE6 and Safari when using Back button - reported to Lithium, they are looking into it
  2. "Sort Threads by Newest Message" turns itself back on - fixed, but not retroactive.
  3. Reply numbers have changed.  The new method causes the reply numbers to not match up between viewing messages "Newest to Oldest" and "Oldest to Newest".
  4. Ratings:
    1. Not showing for threads at the board view
    2. Can rate posts again after a few minutes - the time limit is now much longer, but they can still be rated again eventually
    3. Stars don't show immediately after rating
  5. After replying, the browser returns to the message that was replied to, not the reply itself
  6. Floated Board order changed, with no apparent reason for the new order
  7. User's online status and last connection date is now missing - fixed - but not working correctly for some
  8. Options button is white, can we change it back to black? - fixed
  9. Post page still loads slow (I don't think this is linked to the upgrade, but it is something Lithium is working on)
  10. Error message when clicking back before image is fully loaded.
  11. Scrolling on subscriptions page - is there a way to change the number of items displayed?  The new tab layout makes this awkward.
  12. Tracker - the "Threads I've Replied to" icon is not consistent. - See my reply here.
  13. Subscription emails - Weekly Digest is not working as expected for Board subscriptions.
  14. Tab + Enter behaves sporadically - seems to be fine in Firefox, lots of problems in IE7 for sure.
  15. Time to edit a message - this is now a "strict" 5 minutes, meaning you need to complete your edit within 5 minutes of posting.  Before, you just had to click "Edit Message" within 5 minutes.  I think I have some control over this, but there are considerations due to our synchronization with newsgroups.  I will look further into this issue.
Thanks,
Laura

I asked Lithium about this when reporting it before and I think their answer makes sense - The first two threads in your screenshot you haven't actually replied to - you started them.  If you replied to either of those threads, then that triangle would show up as well.

This only actually seems to happen in boards which are marked as private. In all other boards (including one which is private, but not marked as such) it seems to work fine where I also see threads that I started.

Note - This behavior is wrong. I rely on the icons column to know about threads I was active in and which have new activity. It makes no difference whether I started the thread or just replied to it.

Hi tst,

All the threads in your screenshot you started and replied to.  Do you have an example of a thread you started, but did not replied to which has the triangle?  If the behavior is inconsistent, then I have a much better case for proving this is a bug.

Hi Laura,

I just popped over here to see how thing were getting along with the upgrade. I see you kinda have your hands full with this upgrade thing so I will be brief.

I just sent you an e-mail before checking the board about an edit post problem, but I see you are already aware of this and your number 15 on your list is probably what I am seeing there. The problem is I can't type fast nor think fast Smiley Very Happy and if it is a long edit then 5 minutes is way to short. I am sure you are diligently working on all the issues about this and I thought I would let you know that I had found why my message edits weren't being posted.

I wish you good luck in getting the wrinkles out of the new update. Thank you very much

Ah, I didn't realize the condition had to be so specific for this to occur. I just created a test thread here and indeed I don't see the replied to icon.

I think my reasoning from before still stands and that this behavior is wrong - these icons are useful for tracking new activity in threads I participated in, regardless of whether or not my post was the first one or not, so the icons should be there even in that case.

That said, if it's only wrong in that particular case, it's not as bad, since it's only a corner case with special circumstances and it doesn't need a "need it yesterday" fix.

Hi Laura,

Not a bug report this time... or may be ?

I just noticed that it is not possible to include the source message during edit. Is there a reason behind ? Is that something you could fix ?

And, I insist, the 5 mins edit time window is wayyyyyyyyyy too short ! Give us some oxigen please 🙂

Ray Farmer is not the only one with the "Offline" bug..  Just noticed it right now..

BTW, the strange web page appears to be at my end.  Just saw the LinkedIN page with similar appearance.
