New Ratings Discussion - Kudos

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback.  I'm not really getting a clear picture of what everyone would like to do, so I am going to set up a poll about what the name should be.  So far, the only two options I see are:

  • Star!
  • Kudos!

I'm afraid that shrubberies might make even less sense to some users than Kudos.   Smiley Wink

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Laura

I think Kudos is fine and more appropriate. I has become quite common and is even used by mainstream sites such as blog entires on myspace. The definition of Kudos is quite precise and will be more common internationally in the future.

"Star" has multiple meanings. Except for US kids that got a shiny star sticker on their homework in elementary school for exceptional effort, it also has meanings in astronomy, in the film and music industry, restaurant ratings, etc. and sometimes simply points to a footnote. 🙂

I strongly prefer Kudos, because it gets away from the "rating" connotation of stars.

I think kudos is a good idea.

If you are still looking for an alternative how about a "thumbs up" icon. Ha Ha. You've been thumbed....

I really, really don't want stars. I would just as soon forget that stars were ever used and the mess they created. I think kudos is the best suggestion so far.

Stars are just too common. Like I said 'Kudos' it has a nice sound and I like it even better since I know what the means  Smiley Wink

I just want to raise my voice for international users who don't have a localized forum. I think "Kudos" is not a very common word for non-native speakers, while probably everybody knows the meaning of "star". That's just my personal impression but maybe other international users can comment on that.

Here is the definition from Wikipedia :
Kudos, from the Greek κῦδος, means "fame" and "renown" resulting from an act or achievement.
The greek origin should make the word acceptable by international users. It is not yet recognized in the french dictionnaries but such an official recognition takes some time.

Laura,

Since we are discussing the way the posts are going be rated, is it possible to improve also the way the ratings are displayed ?

On the main board, nothing to change : the "kudos" number should refers to the number of ratings given to a thread.

However, on the Tracker board, it should report the number of ratings given to a post. I'm tired to be told that any of my posts on the NI Discussion Forum Upgrade has received "116 ratings - 4.9 average" !

Well since CC brought up how posts are displayed...

I'd still like to see some of those suggestions I have been waiting years for.

In our traker screen...

1) View by lastest activity

People reply to my posts from a few years ago and if I don't catch it the LabVIEW forum, I miss it completely.

2) Sort by most Kudoed post

Clcik on the Kudoes collumn should display my replies starting with the ones with the most kudoes and work to un-kudoed.

3) Most recently kudoed

Let us see which reply recived the most recent kudoes. Now its nearly impossible to figure out which post got kudoed.

4) NEW! Can we get an update in our subscription e-mail I get every morning that includes a section that list the replies that got kudoed?

So...

Can we get an update on any of these ideas?

Sorry if this has been discussed before (I don't have the courage to search through all the messages...), but I just realize that an option in the user preferences settings may have been at the origin of many rating misunderstandings : when you select "simple" in "Rating Style", you end up with a pair of radio buttons : "Was this message helpfull to you ? Yes - No". And of course, the No button led to a one star rating !

If the "No" button had been removed, I bet the proportion of single stars would have been significantly decreased.

Just an option like "Was the reply useful?" and providing an yes button will be fine.No need of a No button. If the message is totally out of context then we can mention it by replying to it right? We can still more improvise it by providing 2 options. ?YES and KUDOS.Kudos is bulls eye answer equalent to 5 star.?Yes may be equalent to a 4.0 or 3.5. This way there will be no nagative marking right?
