GPIB-USB-HS won't install

I have a GPIB-USB-HS adapter that was working before. I tried to install it on a new computer running Windows XP service pack 2. I first installed the 488 drivers and apps from the CD, as I have done before. When I plug the unit in, it is reported as a new "USB Device" , but there is no message that it is recognized as a NI GPIB-USB-HS. When I try to install the driver automatically it then says it can't install because it can't find software for the hardware. I tried installing automatically, and by pointing it to the INF file in the windows directory.

Actually it does the same thing on 2 different PCs (Dell Optiplex GX-270 and a GX-240). The PC's are otherwise fine, and the 270 has a new motherboard.

I'm beginning to suspect the adapter. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. If it's the adapter I will need to get it fixed quickly.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Let's make sure you're using the latest driver.  You can download the latest version of NI-488.2 from here:

http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/335/lang/en

In addition, make sure you have the latest version of NI-VISA, available here:

http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/831/lang/en

Let me know if you're able to get the hardware installed with those drivers.  Thanks!

Thanks for the response Chad. I had already tried that, and also the same device was working previously with the software versions on the install CD.

I tried installing it on 3 PCs, same result on each one. Each time the computer reported a USB Device, but never reported what kind of device, which I think is why it can't find the driver.

I also have a GPIB-USB-B, and it worked fine on all three machines. The PC would first report a USB Device, then recognize it as a GPIB-USB-B.

I have sent the hardware in for repair.

Dave

henryfgfg,

Have you installed the latest versions of NI-488.2 and NI-VISA? The driver folders will then be located by default under Program Files\National Instruments\NI-488.s and \Ni-VISA respectively.

I thought we were talking about installing the GPIB-USB-B? Maybe I don't  understand the problem you are having.

Hi, Dave,

Is your problem resolved or not?

I am facing same problem as you did.

If solved, can share your solution?

Hi,

I was wondering what version of NI 488.2 you have installed on your computer? Also what is the OS you are running, including either 32 or 64 bit? Are you still trying to use a GPIB-USB-HS or a different device? Does this work on any other computers?

Best Regards,

Hi,

I had this problem this morning when I received a USB GPIB dongle. Apparently, the driver path is not in the system search profile on my laptop. I manually pointed the driver wizard to the NI 488.2 directory and the driver was installed. I have not connected the GPIB to the device yet as it is in a different office.

I don't know if anyone had checked this out, but it's what worked to get the driver installed for me.

Drew
