Serial Number on DAQ Hardware

We had one of our manufacturing people doing inventory on incoming NI hardware. He would input Part Number, Serial Number, Decription, Date recieved,.... into a datbase to track parts. As the boxes are pulled, inventory is updated.

The problem is that when a part is taken out of the box and put into service, when you use the actual serial number on the hardware device, it does NOT match the SN number that was on the box it came in. It seems that most hardware comes in a box with a field called "SN" followed by a unique number starting with "HB"

We have found out the hard way that using this number will NOT give you tracibility of the device since this HB number is not on the actual device.

Is there any way to relate the serial number on the device to the HB number that is on the boxes and packing slips??

OK, just talked to tech support and to local rep. They were able to take both the SN number from the box AND the serial number on the actual hardware modules and trace them back through the NI system to the original order. This is a big help.

I will instruct my inventory control people to inventory by both numbers (Kit # and Module #) to avoid confusion in the future.
