In NI-Serial Troubleshooter the first two ports are shown as failed. The second two pass.
In Device manager the first two show error This device cannot start. (Code 10).
I installed niserial1500f1 on windows 7. Unit is connected directly to computer.
I didn't see anything relavent in windows system error log. Rebooting doesn't change behavior.

First check the gear on the other end and make sure its not violating any of the input limits of the USB-485/4. Then replace the faulty hardware. and hope you don't blow up another one.

Nothing is or has been attached to the unit other than the USB and its a new unit we just received. I am trying to get it set up so we can start development with it.

It appears that the NI drivers are trying to use the same com port numbers as other devices in the computer. I tried changing the com port numbers through devivce manager but that doesn't work. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and it picked the same ports that are already used again.

Have you tried plugging the device into a different USB port on your computer? If possible, another good troubleshooting step would be to try and replicate the behavior on another computer and isolate the source of the error to the USB-485/4 device. I'm guessing that because it won't load in device manager, it also isn't showing up in MAX.
It sounds like the steps you took in installing NI-Serial were a good start and are really all you would need to get proper functionality out of the hardware. If you determine the USB-485/4 device is broken after trying different USB ports and a different computer, get in touch with NI at 1-866-275-6964 for a warranty replacement.

That should have worked.- Try this:
With the device disconnected, Open MAX from the Menu, Tools>>NI Serial>>Recover Unused COM Numbers. REBOOT! to get the registry entries to stick. plug the device back in.

I have verified the unit works on another computer. Its the drivers that need to be returned for warranty replacement. Still can't get it to work on the computer I need it to. The device does show up in MAX.
I have tried the recover unused com numbers and that didn't help. I have opened a support ticket.

What versions of NI Serial are on each computer? You can use MAX to check the versions.
You can download NI Serial drivers from here

They were both installed from niserial1500f1.exe. The working system is both XP and doesn't have the devices it seems to be conflicting with. Those devices are internal to the Laptop so I can't unplug them to see if that makes it work.
