Hi. This is Ken Moller with PACCAR Technical Center. I have had similar problems with the GPIB-USB-B device, with or without my Dell D600 laptop (with Win XP SP2) being plugged into the docking station. I mainly have the problem when I am logging in as a user without Administrative rights, and re-plugging in the USB GPIB device, the device wants to be installed again. The problem -- non-Admins can't re-install it.
In asking NI, I was told that they do not register their GPIB-USB device with Microsoft, so it is not "signed". This means that every time it is removed and plugged back in, it wants to be reinstalled.
I have installed the NI-488.2 Version 2.3 drivers that came with the GPIB-USB device I just got today, and still have problems. Another problem is that, even if I unplug it nicely while logged on as an Administrator, when I log in as a non-Admin and look at NI-MAX Devices, I get a message saying it was unplugged improperly by a non-Admin, which wasn't true.
So, if you NI developers are reading this, please, please, please get your USB devices registered with Microsoft and save all of us people who support non-Admin users a lot of headaches. This is particularly bad when they go out in the field to do testing and they can't communicate via their GPIB device.
Thanks.
KMoller
