New Boolean Diagram constant design!

Status: Completed
Available in NI LabVIEW 2010

The current boolean diagram constant is potentially confusing and too elaborate.

Confusing, because it almost looks like a toggle switch, so the new user might click on the right half, expecing an unconditional FALSE. However, there are no active areas, and an inversion of the current value occurs no matter where we click.

Too elaborate. All we need to see is the current value! Why do we need to see the "other" value greyed out??? We can guess that by simple elimination. 😉 There is too much redundant information, wasting twice as much diagram space than actually needed to display relevant information. The current design also makes e.g. 2D boolean diagram constant very confusing. Have a look at the image. Can you immediately tell that the 2D array on the left is only true on the diagonal? (I did not think so!). Now look at the suggestion on the right. Ahh... much better! 😄

 Suggestion:

The boolean diagram constant should be smaller, simpler, and cleaner.

The image shows the current design on the left and the suggested design on the right.

What a difference in clarity and economy!!

Absolutely brilliant idea - I'm always accidentally clicking a boolean constant and not realising it until after a few hours trying to find why my program no longer works! Also, I find my boolean arrays to be confusing enough in 1D let alone 2D. I hope this gets implemented soon. 🙂

AQ may have been referring to the "Show red Xs on broken wires" option.  (NI - please don't turn broken wires red.)

The color weighting for True (heavy) and False (light) looks great.  While other datatypes allow black as a secondary color for typed text (e.g. numeric, string, enum, ring), your green only rendering is more true to diagram precedence.  Again, nice work.

One global to rule them all,
One double-click to find them,
One interface to bring them all
and in the panel bind them.

excellent idea!! a very compact version of the older design! i must appreciate the idea!

I like the idea of a smaller icon for boolean, especially when used in a boolean array constant.  Very nice.  I like the color green-on-white & white-on-green as shown i the example.  No need for bloody red.

With (at least) 55 kudos, this idea is definitely a good one.

I agree with everybody, too.  I've been trying to drum up support in LabVIEW R&D for this one.  Best idea I never knew I wanted!

Simpler boolean constant - Please, thank you and hurry.

Red for False - No thanks.

Would actually be really nice...

I total agree this suggestion increase readilty and clarity. Having the current design is something confuses new labview users and vote for the suggested.
