Hi avid,

A LabVIEW Toolkit targeting the LEGO MINDSTORMS RCX would be very cool.  (Just to clarify, Robolab is the separate software product from Tufts University that is based on LabVIEW and communicates with both the RCX and the NXT.  I believe the latest version, 2.9, will also be the last.)  Unfortunately, an RCX Toolkit doesn't currently exist, and I'm not aware of any plans to create one.  I can't really speak to the feasibility or the legality of "rolling your own," but I'm sure it would be non-trivial.  If you're interested in pursuing that option, you might start by experimenting with the LEGO MINDSTORMS SDK (http://130.64.87.22/robolabatceeo/references/documentation/default.asp).

I am working on a project interfacing LabVIEW with RCX. I have not set up a test yet but from the looks of this message, I’ll have to use the NXT software with LabVIEW for NXT toolkit. Will the RCX work with LabVIEW for NXT toolkit?

(Edit - just realized you already know about ROBOLAB )

The toolkit is only for the NXT but you may be able to extract some of the libraries from ROBOLAB to work in LabVIEW.  You'd have to do that with help from the ROBOLAB community. ROBOLAB is written in LabVIEW so the code should be reasonably portable.

Thanks, I'll buy a NXT Kit and officially retire my RCX. My reason for using LabVIEW with NXT is that it provides an incredibly cheap platform to assemble computer driven machines. In time, I hope to use National Instruments motors and sensors. Three cheers for NI & Lego.
