Hello, I would like to change my NI PXI 8106 controller into a real-time target, I am really confused I should installa a real-time operating system, or just formatting the hard disk as FAT32 file system and then booting it using floppy disk.

You can try LV Realtime module for 30 day. Download this module, instal on host computer and after that install RT on PXI.

Simply prepare your PXI. Convert to FAT32, after that create the USB boot flash disk in MAX.
Boot PXI from USB. Install the base of RT on PXI with this USB utility. After that boot PXI to RT and install the rest of software with MAX.
