How do I setup cRIO SNTP Time Sync in MAX

Solved!
Go to solution

Fred_V,

Just tried 132.163.4.103 as the address and it did work. Changed the .ini file, rebooted the cRIO, then after about 5 minutes the times updated to the correct time.

Now I will work on trying to figure out what might be happening with my internal network, as i would like to sync the cRIO to the management server that all of the PC workstations sync with.

Thanks for the help.

I am unable to successfully configure the time server option in the cRIO. I have enclosed my ini file. I have one question regarding the server address; what should my IP address be set to?

jeffyy,

I was only able to get this to work using the SNTP plugin with the NI Time Sync 1.2 Beta: http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-14480

Internet Time server was 132.163.4.103 fromt he NIST official list. I have not tried yet to work on getting the cRIO to sync with my network server.

While trying to get my crio to time sync I came across a file(ni-rt/system/ni-timesync/ni-timesync-sntp.ini), how does this differ from ni-rt.ini?

That is the file that you need to update with the Time Server IP Address, don't change the ni-rt.ini file.

There is a post on the 1st page from Fred_V talking about setting up the sntp.ini file

Now I'm confused. The KB talked about the ni-rt.ini file. They both exist. Does anyone know the exact purpose of having the sections duplicated?

The KB article mentioned on the 1st post does not deal with the NI Time sync 1.2 SNTP plugin. When you install the 1.2 beta, the sntp.ini file is created on the cRIO, and you manage the server address from that .ini file (not from the ni-rt.ini file). My guess is that when Time Sync 1.2 is officially released, the interface to setup the time server will be though measurment Automation Explorer (MAX)

Hi all,

I have a very similar problem, that's why I've given up the idea of creating a new topic.

I try to synchronize my sbRIO-9612 to SNTP server. I use LV 2011 SP1.

I have downloaded NI-TimeSync 1.2 and I have followed the instructions ( https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-14480 )

I have tried several server addresses (among them : http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi# ) but it doesn't work. By saying "it does'nt work", I mean : sbRIO time displayed in MAX is not the time expected. While doing these tests, I have not forgotten rebooting the sbRIO, and I have waited for several minutes after reboot. 🙂

Please see attached my sbRIO *.ini files, and a screenshot displaying my sbRIO configuration in MAX.

Does anybody have any idea to help me ?

Julien,

I had abandoned trying to use the TimeSync 1.2 Beta and instead used the built-in SNTP option described here: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/F2B057C72B537EA2862572D100646D43

I am currently on NI TimeSync 1.1.3 (comes with LV 2011), and have it synced to a local SNTP time-server on my network. Note: I am using a cRIO-9022

In the past, I was able to sync to external SNTP server 132.163.4.103 (as described earlier by the applications engineer, only when the Firewall was opened by IT for the IP address of my cRIO. I didn't spend the time to figure out what ports actually need to be opened for this to work externally.

Thank you for your answer Jim !

Actually, there was a problem in the network configuration of my sbRIO. Now that's OK.

PS : Since the topic was pretty old, I have created a new one (I thought that nobody would read my question here, so I have posted my question twice...sorry about that)
