I need to be able to get a notification of receipt of an e-mail, with the ability to filter the subject and sender. I only need to have a boolean output from my application. Any ideas??
You could use an ActiveX control, something like FreePOP, which is freeware. I've downloaded it and had a quick play. Seems pretty good and should give you the functionality you need.
