It sounds like "cursors" are what you want
you can create and manipulate these through propery nodes of the chart. Create a cursor by setting the "cursor legend" visible and then typing a cursor name into one of the boxes. Play around with this and you'll find what you need. (Tip: If you want a solid line set the cursor co-ordinates off plot)
Cursors can be controlled by the user, or set inactive.
