LabVIEW 7 intermitently 'locks up', or freezes the screen, and my techs must reboot their PC. Very intermittent.

This never happens on my PC (I have administrative privileges). I develop the tests, and distribute the .vi's, .llb's to my techs. The screen/LabVIEW freezes, or 'locks up' requiring a reboot. Very frustrating. Looks like a few others are having this problem. I communicate via PCI to KEITHLY 7001, 2001, EDC 521, and 1746, 1756, 1769 A-B PLC's.

Hello AlanSpectrumControls,

It is definitely odd behavior to have only some machines lockup with applications you have created. To figure out what might be causing this we will need to figure out the common thread between the machines exhibiting the behavior.

What OS are the machines running?
What hardware drivers are installed on these machines?
Does the lockup occur at the same point in the application?
What type of antivirus and firewall software is installed?
Any other similarities between these computers but not yours?

With more information we can do some more troubleshooting into the area.

Hi Matt. I develop the vi's on a MicronPC, Pentium 4, Running Windows XP Professional. The (4) PC's in our mfg department are newer HP Workstation xw4100, Pentium 4. (3) of these HP's are 'H T', and (1) is just the 'H' (single processor?). The machine that is only the 'H' does not have Windows Office, or Outlook like all of the other PC's. It also has never 'locked up' like the other (3) PC's. The lock up is very intermittent. I test PLC I/O cards which are typically (8) channel cards. The lock up usually occurs when I am looping through the (8) channels. I use different loops for different applications, mostly for, and while, and I always make sure to put a 50-150ms wait in each loop. I am using LabVIEW 7.0, NI-488.2. The PC's are a
ll PCI, with IEEE GPIB cards. The techs say that these programs dd not lock up with LabVIEW 5.0. We upgraded within the last year to LabVIEW 7.0. Symantec Antivirus, full version 8.1.0.825. So to sum it up, the only commonality is the (3) PC's that lock up have the HT Pentium processors (and have Windows Office, or Outlook), while my PC, and the other one just has the single processor, but my PC does have Office, and Outlook. Our IT guy restricts permissions to the techs, but I have logged into a PC that locks up, and have had our IT guy give me full permissions to that machine, and then let the tech test away, and lock ups still occured. Kinda rules out the administrative rights theory.

The lock ups are very intermitent, sometimes an entire day will go by with no lock ups (rare), but usually it happens ~6 times a day.

Sorry if this seems a bit jumbled, but I am just trying to get as much info down as possible.

Thanks, for your help.

Hello Alan,

It appears that hyperthreading may be causing the issue you are experiencing. Please see the Knowledgebase below for more information on 488.2 and hyperthreading.

Is NI-488.2 Supported on Hyperthreaded Machines?

Please let me know if you have any other questions about this.

Alan,

did this work for you guys? I am having a very similar problem and this didn't work for me and I was wondering if there had been any other optiosn put out there for this. i went from NT machines running Labview 5.1 and I can run an App all the time with zero issues. We then "upgraded" to XP Pro and labview 7.1. Now our apps freeze at random spots during execution. I can run the same program (except for NT / LV 5.1) on the exact same hardware with zero issues.

Any tips tricks on this would be sorely appreciated as my upgrade is not going very well at this point. 😞
